Recall News · By the numbers

Ford has issued 77 recalls in 2026. Nobody else is close.

Data window: January–October 2026 · Published October 20, 2026 · Last verified October 20, 2026

Ford Motor Company has filed 77 recall campaigns with NHTSA so far in 2026 — more than double the runner-up (Chrysler/FCA, with 34) — covering 14,192,450 vehicles. That is 42.5% of every vehicle named in a 2026 recall, out of 651 campaigns industry-wide. The count is not a defect-rate ranking, and this story explains why before it tells you how to check whether one of the 77 has your VIN in it.

A story about a model is not proof that your individual vehicle is affected. Only a VIN check can tell you whether your vehicle has an open recall.

Owner action guide

  1. Check your VIN — on this site or on NHTSA.gov. Seventy-seven Ford campaigns, 37 Ford and Lincoln models and model years back to 2012 means 'my truck is probably fine' is a guess, not a check. A model match is not proof either way; only the VIN decides.
  2. If your vehicle is included, call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or your dealer and schedule the free repair. You do not have to wait for a letter — and for 57 of the 77 campaigns, letters are already in motion.
  3. Tow with an F-150, Super Duty, Maverick, Ranger or Expedition? The year's biggest recall (26V-104, Ford 26C10) is about trailer brakes and lights losing communication — if your VIN is in it, get the free software update before the next tow, not after.
  4. Not a Ford owner? The same check applies. There are 651 campaigns across every major manufacturer in 2026, covering 33.4 million vehicles — including 21 park-outside fire-risk recalls that no Ford is part of.

The shape of the year

Safety

Start with the shape of the year. Through October 20, 2026, manufacturers have filed 651 recall campaigns with NHTSA covering 33,383,950 vehicles. Ford accounts for 77 of those campaigns — 11.8% of the filings — but 14,192,450 of the vehicles, which is 42.5% of everyone recalled. The next manufacturer by campaign count is Chrysler (FCA) with 34, less than half of Ford's total. By vehicles, FCA is also second, at 5,945,328 — Ford's campaigns cover about 2.4 times as many vehicles.

The leaderboard by campaigns filed in 2026: Ford 77; Chrysler (FCA — Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram) 34; Forest River 26; General Motors 24; Toyota 22; Hyundai 20; Daimler Trucks 18; Grand Design RV and Altec Industries 16 each; and a five-way tie at 14 among Volkswagen, Jayco, Jaguar Land Rover, Honda and Blue Bird. Campaign counts and vehicle counts tell different stories, though. Forest River is third by filings but its 26 campaigns cover just 7,186 RVs and trailers. Ford's lead is in both columns at once — the most filings and the biggest ones.

Ford's 14.2 million is concentrated, not spread evenly. The median Ford campaign in 2026 covers 11,405 vehicles — most recalls are small. But the five largest Ford campaigns account for 8,255,268 vehicles, 58% of Ford's total. The biggest single recall of 2026, from any manufacturer, is Ford's: campaign 26V-104 (Ford 26C10), covering 4,381,878 vehicles — 2021–2026 F-150, 2022–2026 Super Duty, Maverick, Ranger, Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and 2026 E-Transit — for an integrated trailer brake control module that can lose communication while towing. Behind it: 1,392,935 vehicles in a transmission-signal recall for 2015–2017 F-150s (26V-237), and two rearview-camera software recalls covering 889,950 (26V-123) and 849,310 (26V-124) vehicles.

Trucks are the center of gravity. Twenty-one of Ford's 77 campaigns touch the F-Series family — 18 involve F-150 through F-750 pickups and Super Duty trucks, the F-150 alone appears in 14, and three more cover F-53 and F-59 chassis. But the filings reach well past the truck line: 37 distinct Ford and Lincoln models appear, and the model years run from 2012 to 2027. A 2026 recall is a filing date, not a model year — a 2015 F-150 and a 2027 Navigator can be, and are, in the same year's paperwork.

The serious end of Ford's 77 is short. None of the 77 carries a park-outside order — industry-wide, only 21 of 651 campaigns do. Two carry do-not-drive orders: 26V-340, for a front lower control arm ball joint on 2021–2026 Bronco Sport and 2022–2026 Maverick, and 26V-090, for a brake pedal that may disconnect on 2025 Transit vans. Thirteen campaigns industry-wide carry a do-not-drive order. Everything else in Ford's 77 is a fix-it recall: schedule the repair, which is free, and drive on unless your specific campaign says otherwise.

Now the fairness paragraph, because the headline number needs it. Ford sells more trucks than anyone in America, and it has an enormous number of vehicles already on the road — every one of them a candidate for a filing that can reach back to 2012. A raw campaign count has no denominator: NHTSA data does not publish a defect rate per vehicle on the road, so 77 filings cannot tell you whether a Ford is more likely to have a problem than a Toyota. It is also worth noting what a filing is — the system working. Each of these 77 is a defect Ford reported and must fix for free. Ford led the industry in 2025 as well, with 146 campaigns covering 12,914,776 vehicles, so 2026 is not a sudden collapse in form: the filings are fewer than last year's pace, but this year's are bigger — Ford's 2026 vehicle total passed its full-year 2025 total before the end of October.

How this was counted

This is a data story, not a single recall: a count of every campaign filed with NHTSA in calendar 2026, frozen on October 20, 2026. The numbers will keep moving — new campaigns are filed most weeks, and this page will be updated rather than replaced when the year closes.

What changes for you is only the odds. With 33.4 million vehicles named in 2026 filings, the practical move is unchanged: check your VIN, and if a campaign includes your vehicle, book the free repair.

Remedy and cost

Cost
Free

Every repair in all 651 of this year's campaigns is free of charge to owners — that is how recalls work, regardless of warranty status. Of Ford's 77, 24 involve a software update as the fix or the recalled component, including the largest: 26V-104's trailer brake module is updated by a dealer or over the air. Owner notification is already underway — 57 of Ford's 77 campaigns have owner-letter dates in the record.

Cost to owners: nothing for the recall repair itself. What the counts do not show: repair completion. A filed recall only fixes the vehicles whose owners bring them in, which is why the check below matters more than the ranking above.

Questions owners ask

Q

Does 77 recalls mean Fords are the least reliable vehicles?

No — a campaign count is not a defect rate. It scales with how many vehicles a manufacturer has on the road and how far back its filings reach (Ford's 2026 campaigns cover model years 2012–2027). NHTSA publishes no per-vehicle defect rate, and this story doesn't invent one. What 77 does mean: if you own a Ford, your odds of being in at least one open campaign this year are higher — which is a reason to check, not a verdict on the brand.

Q

Ford files the most recalls — is that a bad sign by itself?

It cuts both ways. Ford also led in 2025 with 146 campaigns, so this is a pattern, not a blip. But a filed recall is a defect being fixed for free under federal oversight. The genuinely bad outcome is an unrepaired recall, and that part is on owners: a campaign only fixes the vehicles that show up.

Q

My Ford is a car, not a truck. Should I still check?

Yes. Trucks anchor the list — 21 of the 77 campaigns touch the F-Series family — but 37 Ford and Lincoln models appear in 2026 filings, including Escape, Bronco, Mustang Mach-E, Corsair and Navigator, with model years from 2012 to 2027.

Q

What is the biggest recall of 2026?

Ford's 26V-104 (Ford's number 26C10): 4,381,878 vehicles — 2021–2026 F-150, 2022–2026 Super Duty, Maverick, Ranger, Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and 2026 E-Transit — for an integrated trailer brake control module that can lose communication while towing. The fix is a free software update, at a dealer or over the air. Owner letters were mailed March 25, 2026.

Q

I don't own a Ford. Why should I care?

Because 2026 has produced 651 campaigns and 33.4 million affected vehicles across every major manufacturer — Toyota, GM, Hyundai and FCA all have campaigns covering more than three-quarters of a million vehicles. The VIN check at the top of this site covers all of them.
