Check if your vehicle is affected
A story about a model is not proof that your individual vehicle is affected. Only a VIN check can tell you whether your vehicle has an open recall.
Owner action guide
- Check your VIN now — on this site or on NHTSA.gov. Only trucks with 8-inch SYNC screens are in this campaign.
- If your truck is affected, check whether an over-the-air update is available for it — or contact your dealer to have the update applied.
- After the update, shift into reverse and confirm the camera image fills the screen.
- Keep the recall numbers handy: NHTSA 26V-489, Ford 26C37. Ford customer service: 1-866-436-7332.
Affected vehicles
Model years included in this recall, per the NHTSA record.
| YEAR RANGE | MODEL | NOTES |
|---|---|---|
| 2021–2023 | Ford F-150 (8-inch SYNC screens) | |
| 2023–2026 | Ford F-250 SD (8-inch SYNC screens) |
Total affected: 47,587
The risk
A software error may cause the rearview camera image to be obstructed by the infotainment home screen menu when the vehicle is placed in reverse. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, “Rear Visibility.” An obstructed rearview camera image can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
In plain terms: you shift into reverse expecting the camera, and get the home screen instead. The risk is backing up without the view you rely on.
What changes for owners
The remedy is now confirmed and available: the APIM software update can come by dealer visit or over-the-air. Owner notification letters were mailed October 9, 2026.
If you own one of these trucks, the fix is no longer “coming” — it is ready. Check your VIN, then get the update by whichever path reaches your truck first.
Remedy and cost
The accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge.
Cost to owners: nothing. What the record does not say: how to tell whether an OTA update has already reached your truck. If you are unsure, contact your dealer with recall number 26C37.

Questions owners ask
Do I need a dealer visit?
Not necessarily — the update can arrive over the air. If you have not received one, or are unsure, a dealer can apply it.
Is the repair free?
