Genesis G80 and Hyundai Genesis recalled: power seat motors can overheat and catch fire — park outside until repaired

Reported October 9, 2026 · Published October 16, 2026 · Last verified October 15, 2026

Hyundai is recalling 94,622 Genesis sedans. A stuck power seat switch can overheat the front seat motors and start a fire, even while parked. Owners should park outside until the repair — which is still being developed — is ready. Letters go out December 7, 2026.

A story about a model is not proof that your individual vehicle is affected. Only a VIN check can tell you whether your vehicle has an open recall.

Owner action guide

  1. Check your VIN now — on this site or on NHTSA.gov. A model match is not proof your vehicle is included.
  2. Park outside, away from other vehicles and structures, until the repair has been performed.
  3. If a power seat switch sticks, or you notice heat or a burning smell from a seat, stop using that seat control and contact your dealer.
  4. Watch for the owner letter, expected to be mailed December 7, 2026.

The risk

The front power seat motors may overheat due to a stuck power seat control switch, which can result in a fire while parked or driving. A fire increases the risk of injury.

A fire that can start while the car is parked is the reason for the park-outside advice: a garage fire can spread to the house. That is why this recall's first instruction is about where the car sleeps, not about a repair appointment.

What changes for owners

This is a new recall, reported to NHTSA on October 9, 2026. The important change for owners is immediate: park outside, away from other vehicles and structures, until the repair has been performed.

The repair does not exist yet — the remedy is under development — so the park-outside advice is the protection until the fix is ready. VINs became searchable on NHTSA.gov on October 13, 2026, so a VIN check now gives a real answer.

Remedy and cost

The remedy is currently under development. There is no fix to book yet.

When it is ready, it will be free. Unknowns, stated plainly: what the fix will be, and when it will be available. The December 7 letter is the next official update; until then, park outside.
