A story about a model is not proof that your individual vehicle is affected. Only a VIN check can tell you whether your vehicle has an open recall.

Owner action guide

  1. Check your VIN now — on this site or on NHTSA.gov. A model match is not proof your vehicle is included.
  2. If your RAV4 is included, contact your Toyota dealer to schedule the free ECU software update. You do not have to wait for the November 22 letter.
  3. Keep the recall numbers handy when you call: NHTSA 26V-659, Toyota 26TA22.
  4. Buying one? Ask the dealer whether this campaign is open on that VIN before you sign.

The risk

The motor generator ECU may encounter an error, causing the plug-in-hybrid system to reduce power or shut down when driven at higher speeds. An unexpected powertrain shutdown can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

In plain terms: the car can lose motive power without warning at the speeds where you have the least room to react — merging, passing, highway driving. That is the whole risk.

What changes for owners

This is a new recall, reported to NHTSA on October 7, 2026. Nothing about the car itself changes until the repair — but owners should not wait for the letter to find out whether their vehicle is included.

Check the VIN now. If your RAV4 is in the recall, you can contact your dealer about the software update; you do not have to wait for the November 22 letter.

Remedy and cost

Dealers will update the ECU software, free of charge. No parts to wait for — it is a software fix.

Cost to owners: nothing. What is not yet known: nothing material — the remedy is specified and the notification schedule is set.

Questions owners ask

Q

Do I have to wait for the letter?

No. The letter is notification, not permission. Check your VIN now, and if your RAV4 is included you can contact your dealer about the update.

Q

Does this affect the regular RAV4 Hybrid?

No — this recall covers the 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid only. The regular hybrid is outside this campaign's scope. A VIN check is still the way to be sure about your car.
